Our process
From the first conversation
to the finished space and beyond.
Before design begins
Let’s begin with
your home.
A MoBA remodel begins with understanding you and your home: how you live, what isn’t working, and what you hope to create. Our first conversations also help us determine whether the scope, budget and timing are a good fit.
Initial phone consultation
Send us an inquiry, and we’ll arrange a call to discuss your project, priorities, timing and budget expectations. We discuss a broad construction budget range during the call or follow up afterward if we need more time to consider the work.
Paid site consultation
If the initial budget range and your expectations align, we meet at your home. Seeing the space, understanding its challenges and discussing possible approaches helps us refine the general scope and preliminary budget range.
Design & Preconstruction Agreement
We outline the project, the design work and deliverables included, the preliminary construction budget range and the design fee. Once you approve the agreement, we begin developing your project in detail.
Stages 1–4 · Design & preconstruction
From broad ideas
to specific decisions.
Your feedback guides each next step. Design and construction planning overlap as we work through the choices together.
Stage 1: Discovery
Establishing a direction
We bring your priorities, inspiration and the realities of your home together into a starting direction for the design.
You don’t need to arrive with a defined style. If you’re unsure, we can propose a few approaches and use your feedback to narrow the focus.
Stage 2: Concepts & layouts
Exploring what could work
We develop concepts and layout options appropriate to your project, then review them with you.
We discuss how each option supports the way you want to use the space. Your feedback shapes the next version, whether that means refining one layout or bringing together ideas from several.

Stage 3: Design development
Making the design specific
As the direction becomes clearer, we work through cabinetry, storage, materials, fixtures, lighting and the details that connect them.
Drawings, visual studies and samples help you understand and compare the choices. Each meeting refines the design and informs what we work on next.
Stage 4: Preconstruction
Defining the work
We develop the construction scope, coordinate with suppliers and trade partners, and work through installation requirements, pricing and lead times.
The design, selections and construction requirements give us the information needed to present a fixed-price construction contract for the defined project.

Haley leads the design process. Jon contributes his own design expertise, architectural background and hands-on building experience, helping shape the proportions, custom elements and details as we work through ideas together.

An early range.
A defined construction price.
We discuss affordability early, before asking you to commit to design and preconstruction. Pricing becomes more specific as we refine the design and scope of work.
First conversation
Initial budget range
An experience-based starting range helps us understand whether your goals and likely investment align.
After the site consultation
Site-informed range
Seeing your home and learning more about the scope helps us refine the projection. It remains preliminary.
After design & pricing
Fixed-price construction contract
The developed design, defined scope and supplier and trade pricing establish the construction price, with any remaining allowances identified.
Early ranges are projections. We work to identify and discuss when developing decisions or scope changes move the project beyond them. We keep remaining allowances to a minimum and identify them explicitly in the final contract documents, cost summary and scope.
Stages 5–6 · Moving into construction
Bringing the plan
into the work.
The design and preconstruction work comes together in the project documents, then guides the work on site.
Stage 5: Contract documents
Reviewing the plan together
The project documents bring together the scope of work, cost summary, construction contract, drawings, material selection schedule and information about what to expect during the work.
We review the documents with you as they are finalized, creating a shared reference for the work ahead.
Stage 6: The build
Carrying the design into construction
After the construction agreement is in place, we coordinate the preparation and scheduling for the work.
Jon leads construction with an understanding of the thinking behind the design. The agreed scope, drawings and selections guide the work, while his design judgment helps carry that intent through the details and questions that arise on site.

After the work is finished
We’re still here.
Finishing the project isn’t the end of our relationship. As you settle into the space, we check in to hear how it’s working for you and whether anything needs attention.
You can come back to us with questions about the work, care and maintenance, or something that doesn’t seem right. You know who designed and built your space, and you can reach us directly.
We’ll explain the warranty coverage that applies to your project and how to raise a concern. If an issue comes up, we’ll help you work through the next steps and coordinate warranty follow-up as needed. We want you to feel comfortable calling us long after the tools are packed away.
A few practical questions
What to know
before you begin.
Is there a fee for design and preconstruction?
Yes. Most MoBA projects use a fixed fee tailored to the work. Your Design & Preconstruction Agreement explains the fee and what is included. This is separate from the construction price.
How involved will I be?
You can be closely involved in the individual choices or give us more room to develop the design. Either way, we establish your priorities and budget together, then bring key layouts and selections back to you for feedback and approval.
We meet to review the developing design and make decisions together. Meetings are typically in person, especially when reviewing samples. Phone or video meetings also work when appropriate.
What should I send before our first call?
Photos of the existing space are required before the phone consultation. Send a few clear views that show the layout and condition. You can upload them with your inquiry or send them afterward, before the call.
Inspiration images, drawings and existing plans are helpful but optional. You do not need a finished design to reach out.
Tell us about your remodel
Start a conversation.
Tell us where your project is, what you want to change, and any budget or timing you have in mind. We’ll review your inquiry and follow up to arrange an initial phone consultation.
